Tolerant of wind, snow, and poor soil, this tree has light but strong timber, which is used for interiors. BARK Silvergray, smooth, cracking on older trees. LEAF Flat needles with rounded tips, bluegreen on both sides. FLOWER Males: deep red, beneath shoot; females: yellow, above shoot. FRUIT Erect, barrel-shaped cone, 43⁄4–10 in (12–25 cm) long.
