A common ornamental, this pine has a wide, low crown and a massive, straight trunk, which sometimes splits into two or more branches. BARK Smooth, gray, becoming rough and fissured, peeling off into scales. LEAF Twisted needles, triangular in cross-section, dark green above, pale green beneath, borne densely around shoot in fives. FLOWER Males: clustered around shoot; females: at end of shoot, pink-purple. FRUIT Cones, 2–3 in (6–8 cm) long, ripen from green to purple.
