Named after the Sitka Sound in Alaska, this tree thrives in moist conditions, and is found only within 50 miles (80 km) of the coast. Its strong but light wood is used for pulp. BARK Gray, becoming purplegray and peeling with age. LEAF Thin, sharp needles, dark green and shiny
above, two broad white bands below. FLOWER In clusters. Males: red; females: green-purple.
FRUIT Pendent, slightly tapered, pale brown cones.
